MICRO ADVENTURES,
A LESSON IN NO EXCUSES
DON’T SUCCUMB TO THE LURE OF THE COUCH, GET OUTSIDE
Life is full of excuses, we all make them. Bill Clinton said ‘I didn’t inhale’, Shaggy said ‘it wasn’t me’ and Ian Michaels, year 9 from Ramsden Middle School said ‘I was trying to rescue a burning baby from a Rottweiler when I was attacked by a Witch with an eye patch.’
The truth is that most of our excuses aren’t to anyone else, they are to ourselves. It’s that rumbling internal monologue that can prevent you from making the most of a day. It’s the voice that sends you to the couch after dinner instead of getting on your bike or meeting up with friends and going for a run up the nearest peak. So, take some advice from Benjamin Franklin who said “A person who is good for excuses is seldom good for anything else.”
And silence the slob trying to persuade you that the couch is your best option and get outside.
That’s exactly what Beth the physio, Laurie the Builder and Geoff the designer did. The moment they finished work they set off on a micro adventure up Breast peak. The weather wasn’t epic and the trail is an unrelenting climb filled with switch backs and false horizons but who cares when the views are this good and you’re blowing away the stress of the day.
As the sun started to dip the friends reached the half way point, a shoulder of rock that takes in huge views of Lake Hawea and the Southern Alps. It’s at times like this when merino really comes into its own. Having blasted up the hill and worked up a sweat, merino will absorb moisture and even though it’s wet keep you warm. This amazing temperature regulating property meant Geoff, Beth and Laurie were able to take in the views in comfort.
Unsure whether it was going to rain, snow, hail or shine the crew waited for a sign, at that moment the sun winked at them through the deep purple clouds and they took it as an omen to head home. Good job they did too because it pissed down ten minutes after they got home. And that’s the moral of this story, learn the difference between excuses and omens.
