REDEFINING A GIRLS TRIP
ONE ADVENTURE RIG. TWO BEST MATES. TEN DAYS.
Like many worldly explorers, Dana Kallenbach had long endeavored to visit New Zealand; the motherlode of epic landscapes, surreal experiences and untold adventure gems. Having traveled over 13,000 kilometres from Colorado this past Spring, she and partner-in-crime Victoria Caffrey were bound and determined to make the most of the ten short days they had on the South Island. Given these circumstances, an old-fashioned road trip seemed like the best way truly immerse themselves in their travels. A proper adventure rig was acquired, packs were chock full of merino and with the reality of cozying into a small space together setting in, the girls took to the asphalt.
Victoria was coming fresh off ski season isolation and Dana works in a hospital back home, so you could say that a girl’s road trip was well-needed. With an itinerary that revolved around waking up in a new place each day, they worked their way from Queenstown to Christchurch, ensuring that everyday was full of activities.
Queenstown
Slap away the jet lag in Queenstown with some hiking up Wye Creek.
Te Anau & Milford Sound
Eventually, even the most seasoned travelers succumb to cliché tourist attractions. No NZ road trip is complete without a stop at Milford Sound.
Top o’ the morning to you. Coffee always comes before adventures.
Wanaka
The birthplace of Mons Royale is also home to hikes galore.
With a tough climb, comes a glorious view (and maybe a few lakeside brews post-slog)
Mount Cook
The highest mountain in New Zealand and its surroundings provide runs up Hooker Valley Track
Tekapo and Timaru
Riding off into the sunset in Tekapo
Get your feet wet. Surfing is a must in Timaru
Mati the Moon Buggy
To say that the ten days were action-packed is an understatement, but most who are fortunate enough to tread New Zealand’s South Island prefer it that way. While many would argue that living out of a van is an arduous and cramped method of travel, Dana and Victoria found that their road trip vehicle (affectionately now known as Mati the Moon Buggy) became a true little home on wheels.
